Odensehuis

What is the Odensehuis?

'We are a meeting place for anyone who has to deal with memory problems, such as dementia. Freely accessible, without diagnosis or indication.'

Last semester at Minerva, we got to 'work' with people who attend the Odensehuis and meet people with different levels of dementia and memory problems. Our task was to integrate and join in on activities and try to incorporate art into this world.

Overall, it was a privilege to have these experiences and make connections with so many people who have to unfortunately deal with these circumstances. Odensehuis showed me that even when they are dealing with these health issues, there is still a place that welcomes them and embraces the beauty of daily life. There they do different activities such as taking a walk in the park, reading poems, plenty of tea and coffee, some crafts, (especially evident during Christmas season) and so many more. They remember different parts of their lives together and share the remaining memories that still exists, but most of all, they celebrate their livelihood.

Why a Lighthouse?

Lighthouses emit lights and serve as a beacon for boats and ships to come back safely to shore. I chose this as a symbol of Odensehuis, a safe haven for people dealing with these issues to come together during stormy weathers and rough seas.

During the exhibition, there are a few people who felt that they related to this analogy and that was quite comforting but sad at the same time. Comforting because they have a safe beacon but sad because of the stormy weather they deal with in their mind.

Making little lighthouses for everyone to take and have as keepsakes felt rewarding when I could see their faces light up like a happy child.

Why a Treehouse?

Similar to the symbol of the lighthouse as a safe haven, the treehouse acts like a second home for the people there. This time however, the treehouse represents grounding rather than a safe haven and is used as an interactive exercise. The roots provides some stability and grounding whilst the rest of the tree trunk provides strength and comfort.

In the images above, you can see that there are also names of people written in the 'human figures' all around the tree. These are placed where the people felt they belonged. Where they felt the most comfortable and where they want to be in this tree. It was very eye-opening seeing all the different choices and spots some people choose. A few of the figures in the tree are people volunteering there as well as some of my classmates and the teacher that assigned this course, which was also nice to see their choice of location.
